Cities on the Move VI
1999
Bangkok, Thailand

After two years on the road, Cities on the Move came to Bangkok but both the broken tuk-tuks were left in Europe. The two artists managed to negotiate with the local tuk-tuk manufacturer, securing 20 tuk-tuks to be used as free shuttles between the different exhibition venues. They also functioned as a mobile gallery through collaborations with local artists and Tsuyoshi Ozawa’s milk box gallery, Nasubi Gallery. The 20 tuk-tuks were made in different shapes and functions. Recognised as a sort of national icon, the tuk-tuk can be used for various functions such as transporting animals, garbage, milk, gas, water, drinks, etc. With a little fantasy, a fictional tuk-tuk transported Kosit and his pals to Bangkok 543 years in the future, where buildings have legs and taxis fly through the sky. Unexpectedly, Kosit meets his beloved Thai girlfriend who has been kidnapped by gangsters, and our hero driver proves his real love by saving the girl whom he finally marries. A poster was produced and plastered across Bangkok’s public spaces and a comic narrating the whole adventure was also designed, but unfortunately it was never published.
