Another Place in A Day
1997
Deserted and Embraced
former Railway Hotel, Chiang Mai, Thailand

A collaborative project between Navin Rawanchaikul and Rirkrit Tiravanija was part of a one-day exhibition (August 11th) situated at the derelict Railway Hotel building in Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. The two artists presented a site-specific project with three components. First was a large hand-painted billboard of the hotel looking new and pristine, which was positioned from exactly the same view point on open ground in front of the hotel. The billboard resembled those typically placed to advertise a new construction development. The second element comprised five postcard-stands placed at different locations throughout the hotel. Each stand contained free postcards with a photographic image mirroring the scene where the stand was placed. The last part took place after dark with a van containing a mobile movie theatre showing three specially chosen films; a Thai film, a Hollywood film, and film from Hong Kong, all of which storylines pertaining to hotels. The movies were projected onto the hotel’s facade under the night sky.
