Story of I
1996
Linkage/Leakage
Tank Art Center, Cairns, Australia

With focus from personal to community, the project asked people to donate handkerchiefs once again, but unlike the positive response in Japan, in Australia it’s mainly only elderly women who carry such items, so the work was realized with many handkerchiefs from the local charity shop. A part of a group show at the Tang Art Centre, which is inside an old fuel tank dating from WWII, the work stretched each handkerchief over a circular embroidery frame, which was then installed along the circular form of the space. More than one hundred frames of handkerchiefs were stitched with the letter “I”, continuing with the same needle and thread as bound each frame together into a large circular shape.
