An Aesthetics of Immaterialism

Navin Gallery Bangkok, Bangkok, Thailand

For the inaugural Navin Gallery Bangkok exhibition, project founder Navin Rawanchaikul kept things minimal to gauge what kind of reception the mobile gallery would receive from the public. The artist posted a couple of small signs within the passenger seats of the vehicle stating the sentence in Thai and English, “Essence of Art is Nonsense of Object. Essence of Object is Nonsense of Art”, inviting travelers to record their thoughts as to what is art. Navin drew up an official rental contract between himself and the cab driver, displaying it along with his “Gallery Director” business card in a group exhibition at Bangkok’s National Gallery, at which Navin Gallery Bangkok debuted. The project also included a Navin Gallery Bangkok baseball cap that was worn by the driver and later produced as limited edition merchandise for each exhibition. Initially there was a printed schedule as to where the Taxi Gallery would be at a certain time each day, although this was quickly forgotten in favor of chance.
