Navins of Bollywood
2006
Diaspora
Esplanade, Singapore

Shown in conjunction with the IMF World Bank 2006 meeting in Singapore, Diaspora was a docu-performance commissioned by Theatre Works inviting international visual artists, performers and musicians to explore issues of Diaspora. Directed by Ong Ken Sen, the stage setting comprised multiple screens showing images from various regions of the world. This epic image and sound panorama was underscored by a timeline of Chinese music spanning 2000 years, performed by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, which was mixed with electronic music into an ambient environment resonant with nostalgia and future visions. Disconnected to the overall tone, Navins of Bollywood appeared at the final part of 80-minute show which was the only work to take different interpretation of diasporal theme through a comedic slant to nations and identities. The Navins of Bollywood billboard was also displayed in front of the Esplanade’s concert hall where the show was presented over four evenings.
