Navin Party
2006

Working around themes of transitory identity, Navin Rawanchaikul initiated a diasporal theme by searching his first name on the internet, whose origins come from the Sanskrit word meaning “new”. With the intended goal of creating a virtual Navinland, the project busily forged links with similarly named Navins, starting with the formation of a pseudo political party, the Navin Party, which first started campaigning in 2006 with the collaboration of Canadian Tyler Russell. The projectmembers and their collaborators discovered a global diversity of Navins that included Indian television comedian Navin Prabhakar, a Texas-based Ska band Navin’s Thermos, Navin Indian Restaurant in Osaka, and NaVin wine from Slovakia. The aim is to bring all these disparate Navin’s together for a series of productions that includes the musical video work Navins of Bollywood, live performances and the publishing of a periodic newspaper The Navinist. Part interactive virtual exhibition, part anthropological experiment, aside from weaving more common art themes to identity an Diaspora, www.navinparty.com is as much a reflection on the shifting mechanics of a contemporary society living in the virtual age, where relationships and communities are increasingly forged in cyberspace.
