Navin’s Sala
2008
The River Promenade, Bangkok, Thailand

Navin’s Sala is the much anticipated monograph and is the result of collaborations with more than 30 international contributors, who share their interests and provide multi-angled insights into the artist’s oeuvre. Navin and his collaborators celebrated the official launch of this unique publication with a blast of party along with Navin’s first ever retrospective exhibition at Bangkok’s design conscious, waterfront landmark, The River Promenade.

Highlighting works from the Taxi Gallery series through to present, the exhibition spanned Navin’s 15-year career to date and revealed a new 9-metre long Navin’s Sala billboard painting that colourfully interweaves the artist’s past works and characters who’ve appeared in Navin Production’s epic journey. The site-specific installation also included the 16-metre long Lost in the City mural narrating contemporary life in Bangkok, created in 2006 to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Jim Thompson. Responding to its unique architecture, the expansive mural was reinstalled in response to The River Promenade’s extraordinary city views. Incorporating films, paintings, sculptures and comics, also on view is the limited edition Quotations From Comrade Navin ceramic bust and book set specially produced to celebrate the second anniversary of the formation of the Navin Party.

Aside from the launch of book and exhibition, this occasion was livened by an exclusive launch of a new line of Jim Thompson’s Pha Khao Mar Collection by Navin Production. Inspired by the colourful chequered multifunctional fabric popular among rural folk, the Pha Khao Mar Collection is the latest fusion of traditional and contemporary and includes a new range of imaginative handbags, shirts, hats, accessories and home furnishings.
