Please Donate Your Ideas for A Biennale Artist
2004
XXVI Bienal de Sao Paulo
Sao Paulo, Brazil

In proximity to the exhibition’s entrance, a large sprayed graffiti slogan in English and Portuguese read Please Donate Your Ideas for a Biennale Artist requested people to contribute messages to the artist and the public art large. Continuing in the interactive discourse, the work provided paper and writing materials on adjacent tables that were livened with numerous art aligned statements such as What is Art?What is Biennale?Who paid for this Biennale? and Why do you come to this Exhibition? With the intention to give the public an opportunity to express themselves but without leading them through any obvious art display per se, the response was extremely frenetic with the wall completely covered in statements by the end of the first day. With the actively expressive and political Brazilian public starting to write on any available surface a security guard had to be brought in to oversee the process.
