A Blossom in the Middle of the Heart (City)
1997
Navin Gallery Bangkok, Bangkok, Thailand

A collaborative project between Navin Gallery Bangkok and traditional Thai muralist Suttisak Phutararak, the taxi’s interior roof was adorned with a replica mural scene from Bangkok Wat Bowonniwet’s temple. The depiction of a symbolic lotus flower was originally executed by Khrua In Khong, a 19th century monk-cum-muralist who is considered pivotal to the development of Thai modern art. Khrua In Khong was one of the first known Thai artists to incorporate Western art techniques into Buddhist iconography. Bridging historic periods of art and cultural mutation, Navin Gallery Bangkok presents this transitional artist as a metaphor for how westerners look on and perceive contemporary Thailand and its culture, as well as offering passengers a kind of mobile temple to contemplate life while travelling through the modern metropolis.
