History of I Exists in You
1996
Yumeooka, Yokohama, Japan

Linking history with the present, Navin Rawanchaikul’s first ever commissioned public art work involved suspending a huge open book hung from the ceiling above an escalator inside a new mall in Yokohama. The outside cover was coated in an old image of a train station which had been relocated to the basement of the building complex. Across the open double page spread were 12 pairs of names of different streets and places in the neighbourhood; on one page were the names of places that no-longer-existed while on the other page were new modern locations. Within the book’s transparent frame were stored hundreds of postcards written by local children regarding their thoughts and memories of life in their time. The book functioned as a time capsule and is scheduled to be opened up after the year 2016.
