A Dialogue With Oneself
1996
The Second Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art
Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane, Australia

Playing with semiotics, language and how we intuitively perceive things in life, the piece was a small gallery within a gallery, inside which a different object was placed daily for each of the exhibition’s 119 day period. The selection of 119 items by exhibition organizers followed the artist’s predetermined list of objects, universally identifiable ready made household objects, such as envelope, a hammer, a football, a key, a bicycle etc., giving them specific instructions on how to display each item. Subverting notions of art viewing, outside the small white cube room a red light sensor indicated if the room was occupied, with only one person allowed to enter at a time. Aligned to Buddhist precepts, this work wanted the individual to confront the object alone.
