Please Donate Your Ideas for Dispirit Artistic Research
1994
Art Forum Gallery, Bangkok, Thailand

In this two-part series that began in 1992 with the interactive piece Please Donate Your Ideas for A Dispirited Artist, Navin went around his hometown of Chiang Mai asking the public two questions, “what is art?” and “what isn’t art” Using small memo papers to record their responses, the gallery walls were coated with written paper samples while extra paper was available for visitors to continue donating more ideas for the piece. For the second part of the project, the title altered slightly to Please Donate Your Ideas for Dispirit Artistic Research, with the general public asked to give or send the artist what they considered art objects of beauty, which were sealed in clear plastic bags with written details of origin. With 3000 objects donated, the installation displayed a diverse selection of objects pinned to the walls and on tables around the gallery, attributing the series as a collaboration with 3,000 people.
